Welcome to the SFS intec Tutorial. The following demonstration will take you through installation of SFS intec Topdek fastener which is specifically designed to fix Wards Topdek insulation panel.

Ward Topdek panels installed on steel purlins is a widely used construction technique for the building envelope.

With the increasing demands for energy efficient buildings to meet Part L, specifications for built-up systems insulation panels are getting thicker, and slower to lay and install. That’s why pre-engineered solutions such as Wards Topdek are growing in popularity.

The conventional technique is to core a large diameter hole through the foam, extract the foam plug in one piece, the panel is then fixed to the structural steel with a standard self drilling fastener. Finally the foam core is re-inserted and the membrane is welded to create a water and airtight roof.

This three-part operation, is time consuming, and requires three different tools. The condition of the extracted foam core and its reinsertion is a variable which can compromise the thermal performance of the composite panel and the membrane integrity.

The purpose designed Topdek helical fastener incorporates an integral core cutter, so there is no need to pre-cut or replace the core. The special washer slices through the insulation and flattens out once in contact with the sheet.

I will now demonstrate the efficient and correct way of fixing the Wards Topdek insulation with the SFS intec Topdek helical fastener.

Attach the fastener to the long drive. The long drive bit holds the fastener in place through the installation. As no pre-drilling is required, simply drive down the fastener through the membrane and panel in one operation until tight.

A quick tip, constant pressure is required during the installation process so as not to loose the fastener within the build up. Ultimately the clutch of the screw gun will be kicking as the fastener is tightened down to the steel.
