Welcome to the SFS intec Tutorial. During this demonstration we will demonstrate how to fasten a thick top hat to a thin metal deck, without the need for pre-drilling, by using the self-drilling Top Hat to Deck fastener from SFS intec.
Fixing top hats to metal decks has conventionally been done using a bulb-tight rivet, but this no longer needs to be the case. By using the innovative SFS intec Top Hat to Deck fastener, pre-drilling and installing the rivet is a thing of the past.
With SFS intec’s self-drilling fasteners the installation is complete in one simple operation, eliminating both stripping of the metal deck and time wasting. At SFS we know how important time on site is. With this fixing, three SFS fastener installations can be made in the time it takes to fasten one conventional rivet.
The Top Hat to Deck fastener can fix into metal steel deck from 0.7mm to 1.0mm. Before commencing installation, it is important to ensure that you set out the top hats in the correct position as undoing this fixing once installed requires a special pair of pliers, which can be obtained from SFS intec technical support.
When working with the self drilling fastener the same number of fixings is used as with the traditional rivet and there is no loss in technical performance as it gives the same pull out resistance.
You can use standard tooling for this fixing operation. Drill the fastener through the top hat to the thin metal deck.
For the optimum fixing, drive the fastener into the metal until everything is clamped together and the fastener spins freely. The fastener has been designed to spin freely without affecting its performance, and the thread free spin zone prevents the installer overdriving and stripping out the threads.
The integrated washer clamps the 2 pieces of metal together securely.
Unlike other self-drilling fasteners, the Top Hat to Deck fastener cannot be stripped in the metal deck and there is no risk of failure once installed. As you can see there is no distortion in the thin metal as the fixing was completed in a single operation, without too much force or overdriving.
Thank you for watching this Tutorial which shows how to install the SFS intec Top Hat to Deck Fastener correctly.
