New roof firmly fastened on £22 million gloucestershire hospital
SFS intec’s new ISO-TAK® TIA fastening system delivered cost and time savings for the roof of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital’s new £22 million Women’s Centre. Installers found the new fixing system offered cost effective and reliable, high performance fastening in comparison to alternative adhesive options.
The new thermal break, self-adjusting fastener system was specified by roofing contractors Single Ply Services Ltd to secure the 2,000 m2 flat roof on the hospital. The ISO-TAK® TIA system requires fewer fastener combinations and less drilling, thereby reducing the installation time and significantly easing the installers task of mechanically fastening a multi layered, tapered insulation scheme to the concrete deck.
The roofing contractors experienced mixed weather conditions during the construction, including both rain and frost. In addition, the exposed site, demanded high design load requirements from the fixing system. Using the ISO-TAK® TIA fastening system the installers were able to mechanically fix into the concrete deck, even when temperatures were below 5°C.
Robin Hambley, Site Manager for Single Ply Services Ltd, commented: “We regularly use SFS intec’s products but this was the first time we have used the ISO-TAK® TIA system. We used the system in conjunction with an SFS intec ZAK drill extension and the 'stop' device on the ZVK drill bit prevented over drilling and 'cored out' the insulation to accommodate effortless application of the ST sleeve into the insulation layer.
“The ergonomic benefits were also outstanding; our installers could stand during the application process, eliminating painful periods of bending over whilst drilling.”
The tapered insulation scheme at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital had considerable variation in insulation thickness across the roof area, ranging from 90mm to 330mm. The SFS intec system is specifically designed to self-adjust to the insulation thickness, as the fastener engages the sleeve as well as the concrete deck. The ISO-TAK® TIA system requires 5mm diameter by only 35 deep pilot holes for all settings, compared with conventional practice of 60mm or deeper pilot holes for tapered schemes.
The ISO-TAK® TIA system was used at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in conjunction with Sika-Trocal membrane. Mark Harris, Head of Marketing for Sika-Trocal, said: “SFS intec meet our strict requirements for mechanically fastening Sika-Trocal membrane roofs. We have been working with SFS intec for over 30 years, using a range of its products. The Gloucestershire Royal Hospital project was the first one we used the fastening system on and we were very impressed by the time saving benefits created, with drilling time reduced by 40%.”
