Norwich City Council - Norwich Bus Station
Style, practicality and airtightness. All three were successfully achieved on this particularly innovative venture.
Main contractor Bluestone plc was invited to work in partnership with the Local Authority and their design team. Their brief was to provide a State of the Art New Bus Station in the centre of Norwich.
Roofing and Cladding contractor WWR (UK) Ltd was subsequently approached very early in the design process. They joined the team at a stage when all that was available was a design concept scheme identifying a notional shape. The brief also required the utilisation of contemporary materials and systems in an imaginative way that would provide a visually stunning yet functional Bus station.
This early involvement from WWR (UK) Ltd allowed the design team to take full advantage of their knowledge and expertise in providing solutions to complex roof shapes and design. Kalzip stucco embossed aluminium-standing seam sheeting was specified as the external roof finish because it provided the flexibility and robustness needed to accommodate the unusual shape.
As well as flexibility and strength the Kalzip sheeting also produced a stunning effect. The finishing touches were provided by the coated bullnose feature around the perimeter of the roof canopy together with the contrasting white profiled metal soffit.
Other details included welded hip and ridge features and a bespoke rainwater drainage system comprising large capacity gutters and feature rainwater down pipes. A project specific Louvre system at the junction between the main building and the roof canopy was also designed and installed.
