IKEA - Distribution centre, Doncaster

Initial cost reductions and better thermal efficiency allowed this development to meet PART L requirements and save money at the same time.

Ikea

A major new distribution centre for IKEA stores in the North and East of England was built outside Doncaster using innovative membrane roofing systems. By using the SFT (Sarnafast Tube) system from SFS intec to fasten the heavily insulated roof, installers Roofdec Ltd achieved improved windlift resistance and better thermal efficiency. This allowed them to meet the latest PART L requirements, whilst making significant installation cost savings.

70,000 sq. metres of Sarnafil T membrane was fastened over 140mm of Rockwool Duoroc mineral insulation, to steel decking over purlins. Also included were 150 roof lights and numerous smoke vent penetrations.

The new SFT system ensured a completely effective thermal break for insulated membrane roofs. It also delivers 30% greater resistance to wind uplift than the previous system. This enables the construction to meet the enhanced Part L requirements with fewer fasteners in spite of the number of roof penetrations.

The SFT comprises the SBF-SQ3 Sarna screw pre-assembled to a nylon telescope tube either in 50mm barbed head form for inseam fastening, or 20mm head form for Sarnabar or insulation attachment. The new system can currently accommodate build ups of up to 450mm and the special TI-Z10 screw can be used with concrete decks as well as steel and timber.

The low thermal conductivity of the nylon tube of the SFT ensures the compliance of the system within the current PART L and will ensure that future revisions can be accommodated.

Installation of the SFT system required dedicated tools. The TP10, 19 and 30, were purpose designed by SFS intec to prevent overdriving and possible heat damage to the telescope caused by standard telescope tooling.
