Faster flat roof fastening demonstrated on new IKEA

SFS intec's innovative ISO-TAK thermal break telescopic fastener for single-ply membranes was specified for the new flagship IKEA store at West Quay, Southampton.

Roofing contractor Topek was impressed by the combined speed and accuracy of the fasteners and the new SFS intec IT-18 ISO-TAK installation tool.

“It’s an excellent tool,” commented Topek Project Manager, Steven McCrory. “With the pre–assembled ISO-TAK fastener system and the IT-18, we were able to fasten through the membrane and 120mm PIR insulation to the metal deck in one operation, with minimum effort and maximum accuracy and speed. The fastener was set properly every time without misalignment.”

Steve Greaves, Sales Director of Flag UK commented: “Our TPO 1.2mm Sand Grey single ply membrane is a high specification choice for large flat roof areas, like this 11,000m2 roof for IKEA. The ISO-TAK fastener ensures that the membrane is securely fastened to meet wind loading and weather tightness requirements. We work closely with SFS intec and we are pleased to be able to help demonstrate the new IT-18 hand setting tool as it ensures the highest possible fastening standards, while enabling the contractor to spend less time on the roof.”

“Site applications have clearly demonstrated that the new IT-18 installation tool with pre-assembled ISO-TAK fasteners will fasten single ply membrane significantly faster than traditional fastening techniques,” adds Martyn Holloway, Flat Roofing Applications Manager at SFS intec.

“Seeing the time savings that can be made by a leading contractor on a large scale project shows how effective the IT-18 and ISO-TAK combination is.”

Use of the new IT-18 installation tool ensures perpendicular fastening to the correct depth for every fastener setting, with reduced effort for the installer compared with traditional techniques*. This prevents overdriving of the fasteners into the insulation and ensures the same high quality pull out resistance right across the roof, no matter how large an area.

The ISO-TAK range of thermally broken fasteners will fasten both insulation and single ply membrane, with high resistance to wind uplift and without thermal bridging. The fastening system consists of a 19 strong ISO-TAK range of flanged Polypropylene tube types combined with SFS intec ISO-TAK fasteners suitable for steel, ply and concrete substrates. *

*Technical notes

The user friendly IT-18 installation tool has been designed to reduce the risk of back and repetitive strain injuries by minimising bending, for improved comfort and on-roof safety for the installer. The 'traditional' method uses a screw gun and a short drive bar requiring the contractor to bend for every fastener application.

Available with A4 austenitic grade 316 stainless steel fasteners, the ISO-TAK range may be used for specifications requiring 25-year warranted systems to ensure maximum performance from single ply roofing design.

Using the ISO-TAK thermally broken fasteners ensures that no penalty is required with respect to thermal bridging when calculating thermal transmittance values in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO 6946 Annex D.

In comparison with traditional plate and screw fastener application, the result is a reduced thickness of insulation required to achieve a specified U value. The new ISO-TAK range will accommodate insulation thicknesses up to 700mm, and therefore will easily comply with changes to Part L of the Building Regulations (England & Wales) in 2010 and beyond.
